Facebook has just announced the latest inclusion to its 955 million-user strong social network. Facebook Gifts is the name of the new offering – a service allowing users to – well – buy gifts for their friends over Facebook.
When the service is released, it will allow users to choose a gift and add it to a message. When received by their friend, they will then be able to enter their shipping info, change the details of the item (such as clothing size), and the gift will then be delivered to them.
Conveniently (for Facebook and – just maybe – their shareholder’s wallets), we’ll be seeing integration with those convenient little birthday notifications, as well as notifications for life events and on user’s profiles.
Business’ will also be able to take advantage of this new feature. They will be able to offer items as gifts for delivery – any business page owners interested are encouraged to contact Facebook.
One thing is for certain – it’s a positive that further monetization of the platform has been done in a socially beneficial manner. A gifts service provides a form of value to users while also providing revenue for Facebook, who at the moment is purely dependent on revenue generated from advertising.
Do you think the new Facebook Gifts service will be of value? Do you see yourself using it? Do you think business’ will be quick to catch on? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
